The Church of the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral of the Ancient Temple is a Catholic of historical and artistic importance of the city of Rio de Janeiro , in Brazil . Was listed by Iphan in 1938 with all his collections.

Its origin dates back to the sixteenth century, when it was founded the brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament at the first Mother City, then in Castle Hill , who was elevated to the status of cathedral in 1680. The brotherhood accompanied the Cathedral in its successive changes to the churches of St. Joseph , Holy Cross of Military and Our Lady of the Rosary . However, when moved to the Cathedral Church of Carmel in 1808, remained in the brotherhood of the Rosary Church.

So, it was felt that it was time to have a brotherhood temple itself, and in 1816 the Portuguese architect João da Silva Muniz was in charge of the project. The chancel was ready after four years and may receive worship. In 1826 he was made a parish of the Blessed Sacrament, going to church, still incomplete, to play the role of mother. The works lasted until 1859, when a solemn procession moved the old pictures of the Cathedral of Castle Hill, deposited in the church of Carmo, until their new home. Four of them still adorn the altars.
